We know about the lives of famous struggle heroes but what about the lives of ordinary South Africans who struggled with injustice, discrimination and poverty on a daily basis? Abantu Abadala: Conversations with the Elders is an enlightening, intimate and heartfelt visual portrayal of 16 senior citizens who lived before, during and after apartheid. The Oldies, as they are affectionately called, share their treasurable wisdom in the form of advice and messages they would like to leave for future generations.

I produced this book for Uthando (Love) South Africa, a non-profit organization run by James Fernie. I was responsible for all aspects of producing the book including photography, coordinating the interviewing process, editing and making videos for the e-book.

Photographing the Oldies was humbling and nourishing. We can all benefit from their healing gaze and their messages for humanity. I feel privileged to have spent time with them.

Please visit www.uthandosa.org if you would like to purchase a copy. Proceeds of the sales support Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) and Masibathande senior citizens community projects.
