06 Jul Gargano Promontory, Puglia, Italy
The Gargano Promontory in northern Puglia stretches about 65 kilometres into the Adriatic Ocean on the west coast of Italy. In 1995, almost all of the promontory was declared a national park including the Umbra forest. At 11,000 hectares, this is one of the largest forests in Europe. Pilgrims crossed this area en route to Jerusalem and visited the sanctuary of Archangel Michael at Monte St. Angelo who, according to legend, first appeared in 490 B.C.
