South Africa’s regional Burning Man festival takes place annually in the Tankwa Karoo desert. Burning Man is an arts festival that encourages radical self-expression. AfrikaBurn challenges the photographer to participate as well as observe. Despite the dust and extreme temperatures, it is impossible not to take photographs. One feels as if one has stepped into another world with transformative, participatory art installations, revellers dressed or undressed according to their fantasies, and an obligatory spirit of gifting. When one returns, one somehow feels as if the magic that happens there has travelled back to the everyday world and, as it slowly fades, the challenge is to keep up the practice of participation and unconditional giving until the next pilgrimage to the desert.
